this just in...

just confirmed dates to head to Nashville in Jan 2013 to start work on a new CD - look for that in the spring of next year!

3 churches in 3 days

and what an awesome 3 day weekend it was!  My final destination was Seaside Methodist Church in Sunset Beach, NC for a 4pm concert on Sunday Nov 18 BUT before I got that far south, I stopped at St Mark's Catholic Church in Wilmington, NC to enjoy a pot luck dinner with a wonderful lively group and then did a concert.  Thank you Alex Hill, music minister, for the invitation...we'll have to do it again!
Back in the car to Shallotte, NC that night to lend my music Saturday to a day of reflection on the psalms by Pat Bowers & Jane Moore from St Brendan's Catholic Church (Pat, Jane & I did a program for Holy Redeemer Church in Kitty Hawk NC earlier this year).  This was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday w/60+ folks interested in sharing their faith journey through the psalms and music - thanks you Pat & Jane and Mary Hart for including my music in your day!
That evening I sang at St Brendan's 5pm mass - beautiful church, large congregation - thank you Mag & Tom, music ministers, for allowing me to participate.
The next morning I sang for the Seaside Methodist's 8am and 9:30am services - got to play "These are the days of Elijah" with the Praise & Worship band - thank you Lynn & Tim - at the 9:30am service.  The Youth Sacred Movement Group lead by Jamie, opened the service with "Arise My Love" using glory rods to accentuate their movement - it was beautifully done - brought tears to my eyes!  Thank you to Mary Jane & Scott Wilson-Parsons (co-pastors) for making me feel most welcome!
Back to the other side of town, I lead music for the 11:15am mass at St Brendan's and did we move the mountain!  Thank you Fr Ryszard, Pastor for working with me and Judy Snopek for helping coordinate everything- it was an energizing liturgy - AMEN!
The concert at 4pm was great - thank you Don for running sound and Kathryn Parker, music minister, for her help in coordinating all!
and a special thank you to all who came to the workshop, masses, services and concert - it was great to talk and share with those I met...
And so on this night before Thanksgiving, I am thankful for friends, family, my music, my journey and my God...
Happy Thanksgiving...

another Living Room Concert!

great big THANK YOU to Carole Garrett who hosted a Living Room Concert last night in Duck and to all who joined us.  Carole won the concert at a silent auction in Feb this year at the annual Paws for Love Benefit helping our fury 4 legged friends at Feline Hope.    Thank you to all who donate their time and funds to Feline Hope.  The organization has made great strides over the last 10 years in decreasing the stray cat population in the Outer Banks, finding homes for many cats and caring for medical issues of many strays.  Keep up the great work Lita, Lisa & team!

I still have openings for Living Room Concerts - email or call me if you're interested!

Andy...

As a college student at William & Mary in Williamsburg, I met some great folks who mentored me in many ways.  Cindy Miller was an upper class woman also from NJ and work with me in music ministry for the Catholic Student Association.  Just before she graduated, she met this very Irish handsome teddy bear of a man, Andy Jennings...that was all she wrote.
Cindy & Andy formed a wonderful partnership on and off the stage.  We have stayed connected through the years.  I was invited to sing at their restaurant in Richmond VA Rare Olde Times...and most recently at the church Cindy is music minister at: Church of the Redeemer.
Andy joined the choir of angels this week...he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
"go in peace Andy Jennings, God be with you - go in peace, be at rest..."

2012 Christian Music Summer Concert Series

This year's program will be at the Good Life Gourmet (MP 4.5 on the bypass in Kitty Hawk) again starting Memorial Day May 28 - Labor Day Sept 3.  I will kick off the season May 28.  We've expanded the program this year to include a 7-8pm set for open mic for those who may not have a full set of material  or who we weren't able to schedule as a featured act.  The 8-9pm set is for the featured act & amp; we have some great ones this year!  All musicians donate their time and the love offering is donated to the Food Pantry & ICO (interfaith Community Outreach).  Hope you will join us - it's a family event, not a service or alter call, just good Christian/inspirational music Outer Banks style!

Manteo first First Friday

Sang last night at Manteo's first First Friday of the season!  Beautiful night with a full moon!, lots of friends & new faces - downtown is looking good, put back together after Irene.  I was set up next to Ortegaz Southwester Grill - good fish tacos Kristen & Dave - thank you! A well fed musician is a happy one!  The Dare County Arts Commission had their grand opening last night as well (after being closed for 8 months due to Irene water damage)  - the place looks great and has a very nice exhibit of our local talent.  If you get to Manteo, check it out.  Rumor has it that the upstairs court room will be a performance area some time in the future - the council is trying to entice more musicians into the organization so musicians put that venue on your list!  I will be back at First Friday Sept 7.

On the way home I stop at Tale of the Whale to chat with owners Carol, Kathy & Dan - the new Gazebo (Irene washed the old one) looks beautiful and, per Dan, is a little larger than the last - that means more seating for listening ears, dancing tots & osprey watchers!
I'm at the Tale this season 5-9pm on Fridays beginning June 15 - check out my web calendar for more dates and venues...come enjoy the beautiful setting.

Earlier this week I got a chance to head up to Duck to the Loblolly Pines Shopping Center to chat with Salty Paws Biscuits owner Susan Beauvais who just opened her new store (she also has her first store in the Jockey's Ridge center in Nags Head).  They are building a gazebo and I'll be there Thursdays: some nights 6-8pm, others 7:30-9:30pm depending on the Town of Duck's concert series (Loblolly is across the street from the Town Green where the concerts are held so check the web calendar for details).

Other venues this season include Avon's Froggy Dog - Wednesdays 5:30-8:30pm, Timbuck II Shopping Center Tuesdays 6-9pm.

 See you soon!

wireless connections...

One morning last week I started out on my morning walk to the beach with my 4 legged fury walking buddies , Winston & Jake...
We got started earlier than usual and met some neighbors along the way so it took us longer than usual. As we crossed the bypass, my friend Nellie, was turning the corner with a gentleman she was walking with.  As I yelled hello, he went down - down flat and hard.  Nellie acted quickly, he sat up... he went down again - she started CPR, I called 911 which was all I could do with 2 dogs at my side.  While on the phone with 911, police, drive bys & eventually the ambulance all arrived.  Three people, including Nellie, rotated administering CPR.  It did not look good for the man.  All I could do was pray - I was frozen in time: I couldn't move, I couldn't get off the phone because 911 dispatcher told me to stay on until the ambulance arrived, I couldn't physically help.  I finally left the scene almost in tears over what I just witnessed, went to the beach & prayed more...and everyone who asked what happened as I passed I answered "say a prayer" - not just for the man in need, but for all who were helping.

I saw Nellie at church yesterday who said the man, Thomas, is fine - he had a stent put in.  Everyone involved did a great job & acted without hesitation, including those I asked to pray.  Maybe it wasn't Thomas's time, maybe it was just to bring those who were there together for whatever reason...

I had no clue until yesterday that Nellie didn't have her cell phone with her that morning - thank God I did...but with or without our cell phones, we obviously had the best wireless connection on the beach that morning - good thing for Thomas the lines were open.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter! Spring has sprung at least a month ahead of the usual schedule in the Outer Banks: butterflies in February, soft shell crabs in April...my summer schedule for the most part is up...still have openings for living room concerts & weddings if you're in the area.

Had a great time at the Nags Head Links Players Grill on Saturday - good folks & people, beautiful view of the sound & Mother Natured supplied a nice sunset.
Masses were packed at Holy Redeemer for Easter Sunday services...where do they all come from?? We're glad all could join us...& we say thank you to all the volunteer ministers who helped during the mass. Summer mass schedule will begin Memorial Day weekend Saturday May 26.
I am really excited about a new CD project I've started work on...more to come as it evolves!

Wicked!

Treated myself to an evening out without my guitar last night in Norfolk at Chrysler Hall to see WICKED - the story of the "Wicked" Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. It was a fabulous presentation - it really warmed my heart to see/hear/feel such a talented group sharing their gifts - and these folks are so gifted! Stephanie Torns (standby) played Elphaba, the wicked witch & did a suburb job - love her voice!! With music done by Stephen Schwartz how could the music be anything but EXCELLENT (same composer of GODSPELL)?!

Tiffany Haas played Glinda (the good witch) and also did a wonderful job. The set is awesome! Kudos to all involved!
A must see if you are in the area...

Lighthouse Center Benefit Release

Outer Banks Celebrity Raises Money for Homeless in Virginia Beach

More than 100 people gathered to hear the melodious sounds of singer/songwriter, Kim Kalman. Kim’s eclectic music was a delightfully range of light jazz to Christian, pop and country. The theme for the evening was definitely lending toward inspiration, love and the upcoming Valentine’s Day. February 10, 2012 marked the third year that Ms. Kim Kalman has generously donated her time and talent to raise funds for Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Lighthouse Center. The singer performed a number of songs from her collection of albums including songs from her 2010 Valentine's Day release, “With Love.”

Also present were participants from the Lighthouse Center who displayed one of kind art pieces and told their stories of how art helps to soothe the pain of homelessness.

The benefit concert was held at The Church of the Holy Family, located at 1279 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Va. The concert raised more than $1,500 which helps provide general support for the Lighthouse Center - serving over 400 homeless men and women each year. Debbie Maloney, Program Director said,- "It was a wonderful night of community support, beautiful music by Kim and exceptional Art! No one wanted the amazing musical night to end.”

Teresa Stanley, Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s board member stated - "Kim's journey from the Outer Banks to bring her gifted voice and music to the VA Beach faith communities, is an annual inspiration to those of us who serve our homeless brothers and sisters in our community".

Volunteers of America Chesapeake is very grateful for the generosity of Kim Kalman and extremely proud of the hard work all of the staff and volunteers put into this event each year. The impact that an event has on the community and the clients we serve cannot be measured. Once again we salute Ms. Kalman for being “called to care”!

Kim Kalman, local musician, performed at a living room concert at the Southern Shores home of Janice and Charlie Smith.
Ms. Kalman donated the concert as part of a fund raising effort by the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, who are
responsible for preparing the Dare County Citizens' Guide.
Ms. Kalman is well known for her great repertoire of originals, standards, and inspirational material. She welcomes
conversation, questions, and interaction with her audience during her living room concerts. It makes for a very special, enjoyable, and memorable evening for all in attendance.
Kim Kalman also leads music at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Parish, performs locally throughout the year, and hosts the Christian Music summer concert series benefitting The Interfaith Community Outreach Program (ICO) and the local Food Pantry. Kim is a wonderful performer and a person who truly gives back to her community through her music. (Kim@KimKalman.com)

catching up!

It has been a busy month! Had lunch with the Christian Women's Group on Feb 2. Jan Martin & Gail Leonard spoke about our shelter for the homeless in the Outer Banks called Room at the Inn. I did a benefit concert for the homeless shelter in Va Beach, the Light House Center on Feb 10. Sunday Feb 12 I was at the Universal Unitarian Church here in Kitty Hawk and that same night sang for the Feline Hope benefit dinner Paws for Love.

I had a great time at all these functions meeting and talking with members of community. Thank you to all the volunteers who give their time to these causes and their community.
Valentine's Day I delivered a singing Valentine to Faze at the Black Pelican in Kitty Hawk - that was fun! The same evening I was at Kelly's in Nags Head for a busy night and great crowd!
I'll be back at Mighty Wind UMC on Sunday Feb 19 and March 4 for their 10am service in the music room of First Flight Middle School.
This Sunday I'll be at a Living Room Concert in Southern Shores for the winner of the silent auction/fund raiser for the League of Women Voters.
I'll also be at Ignited By Truth convention again Feb 24 & 25 in Raleigh at the Convention Center leading music on Saturday. Come by my booth if you're there!
Thank you all for your continued support & for making Feb 2012 anything but a quiet month!

my buds...at St Jude

more w/St Jude

me & Winnie w/my young friend...too cute!

Danny Thomas & St Jude

This came across my emails today: On February 16, the U.S. Postal Service will officially release the new Danny Thomas stamp, just six weeks after what would have been his 100th birthday. And fate being the sly gal that she is, this week our family -- and families worldwide -- will be celebrating another big day: the 50th anniversary of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which was certainly the crowning achievement of our father's life and career.

The whole article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marlo-thomas/st-jude-at-50_b_1257228.html
My support for St Jude Hospital goes back a few years. It actually started when I was a youth minister at St Bede's in Williamsburg, VA. When I produced my first Christmas project, Christmas with You (on cassette) the proceeds went to St Jude. My next Christmas project, All Hearts Go Home For Christmas, produced in LA was also a benefit for the cause - all the writers, musicians and producers volunteered their time and talents and local business supported our efforts financially. When all was said and done, we donated $13,000 to St Jude over the life of the project. I performed at the hospital - one of the most moving performances I've experienced and then toured the hospital singing Merry Christmas and Felice Navidad to the kids who couldn't get to the lobby. Looking at these photo takes me right back to conversations with these kids and their parents.
